Developing Leadership Skills in Our Youth

Leadership and socialization skills are two important attributes that you will find in many children here at the Children’s Home. For nine children however, it is what has brought them together to serve on the SCC (student concerns committee). The Student Concerns Committee is a new committee formulated by Anita Paukovits, Executive Vice President of the Children’s Home and executed by Mike Miskevish, recreation director. One child from each unit is chosen to sit on the committee due to their leadership skills and positive attitude. The main reason for the committee is to let the children’s voices be heard. They discuss any issues or concerns that they may have or that need to be brought to administrations attention. Many good things have come from this group of dedicated children. They planned and executed the first annual Mike Litik Thanksgiving Day Meal celebration on November 15 in the gym. The administration served the food and the entire campus was invited to the event. It gave everyone the chance to be in the same place at the same time and to be thankful for what they have. The evening started with a speech from Sharif on “What Thanksgiving means to me in the Children’s Home” and Doquan gave a prayer. The group as a whole is also very serious about giving back to the community . They are involved in preparing and delivering meals to Safe Harbor on a regular basis. Members of the committee; Trey, Anthony, Tia, Destiny, Andrew, Shareef, Duquon and Jose have been working hard and are now planning for a possible Spring Fling and a Talent Show. This is an exceptional group of children with wonderful leadership abilities whom are making a difference both on campus and in the community. They are committed to making everyone’s voice heard and to get to know everyone on campus. They are truly living up to their committee mission statement which is “A group of young adults dedicated to positive attitudes and positive change within ourselves and our environment”. We are sure to see many more good things coming from this group of dedicated students.

Giving Opportunities

There are may ways to help our young people and our home. Contributions from generous donors fulfill many wishes for our youngsters.

Our recently-renamed Howard Fund (formerly the Scholarship Bed Program) continues to be a top priority in our efforts to provide a home and care for any child who is in need of our services. It provides for short term or long term resident children who come to us from sources other than county and social service channels.

Contributions to our Ruth Baumann College Scholarship Fund for Higher Education and our Aftercare Program provide needed funds for our students in college or those young people after high school.

We continually raise funds for the Aftercare Program, which provides for our young people living in Zigmund Hall.

Pennsylvania Educational Tax Credit Program: We were very pleased to learn in the summer of 2004 that our application for inclusion in the PA Educational Improvement Tax Credit program was approved. We were also approved for funding for the program in the Fiscal 2005 and 2006 Commonwealth Budget. Under this innovative state program, C corporations are able to receive up to a 90% state tax credit for their charitable contributions to approved educational improvement programs. Corporations making a one-year contribution may receive an 80% state tax credit, while those making a two-year commitment will receive a 90% credit. Three of our programs are currently approved. For further information please call Brian Leidy at 610-258-2831 ext. 132 or email brianl@thechildrenshome.org.

Planned Giving, monthly sponsorship of this web site with "Special Thanks to..."  banner on our home page, and general donations all are some of the many ways to help. If you would like to learn more, please call 610-258-2831, extension 150. Thank you! We are also looking into a plan for on-line giving, so please watch for future news.
